we made it. can't really figure out how but we did. strangely nobody makes a comment about this night (later dan just says one thing saying it all ‚it frightened the shit out of me'). everybody is just exhausted and probably happy that it's over. some snorkelling. in the evening dolphins, huge flogs of bats and flying fish. during dinner i'm suddenly slapped in the face. i'm surprised because i can't remember that i have done anything impolite to the girls - hey, maybe that's the reason? the explanation: a flying fish jumped on the boat directly in my face and landed on my plate. hooray, the animals are back in my life!
arrival in lombok. take a boat to gili air with the canadians. take a hut a coconut cottage, a great recommendation from derren and lucy. yummy food for dinner: snapper. meet graham a very nice skiing instructor from australia who works in austria in winter. he wonders where i'm from: as so often he's guessing i'm canadian (which would make any canadian laugh) but he's close assuming a german parent.
5 am, sunrise with mt. rinjani in the background. snorkelling tour with a shark and turtles. extreme lunch: pretty big peace of a huge red snapper, have it barbecued under close personal observation. this piece is bigger than the plate, must be close to a kg. graham passes by and can't believe his eyes as only a little piece and some fishbones are left. i have to admit i only made 4/5 of it. but it was great. need espresso and sleep to recover from this suicide attempt. the work continues in the evening: buffet with saskam food. stuffed again. chatting through the night with graham.
scuba tune up course. haven't forgotten too much. again lunch at the ‚huge fish restaurant'. i guess my reputation is already ruined: i'm very warmly welcomed ‚aah our friend! like a little fish again?' i go for a sensational chicken curry, as usual i hang out in the kitchen and watch them. when i tell graham about it later he laughs: ‚i always wanted to do that but i didn't dare to ask in all these weeks'. outstanding sunset with the balinese vulcanos in the background. lobster for dinner. discussion with the chef about the sauce i want him to make. good food but a bit too much work, especially if you don't have the right tools. surprise: real cappuccino!
diving day. only one shark but an attacking trigger fish (it's not a divers' rumour. they really hunt you with their little teeth). loads of fish and some turtles. heaps of shrimp for dinner with excellent lemongrass sauce. chatting with the chef again. back to the hotel. surprise: shrimp sale. so i have another pound of it. this is almost as the great as the 6 course meal in udajpur.
